CABOT TRAIL

Wednesday, September 7

Once we reached Nova Scotia, Tuesday late afternoon,  the weather was quite inclimate so we decided we needed a break from the motor home and found a hotel in New Glasgow for the night.  It was a welcome relief with an indoor pool and waterslide for the girls and a hot tub for Kent and I, we needed this because the weather was very damp and cool.  We were planning to stop in Antigonish but chose New Glasgow instead becuase they had a RV dealership and we were wanting to get our shocks checked.  Kent took the motor home in to get checked out this morning while I stayed at the hotel and let the girls play in the pool, much to our relief everything checked out fine on the motor home and we were back on the road by noon.  Now it is up to Cape Breton Island where we stopped at a darling little town called Baddeck.  Baddeck is where Alexander Graham Bell and his wife Mabel had a summer home - a beautiful estate on 400 acres by Bras d'Or Lake.  It was here where Mr. Bell did alot of his experimental work on aviation and where his 'plane' the silver dart was made which won one of the prestigious flight competitions of the time.  We toured the Alexander Graham Bell museum and checked out the various gift shops and art galleries in the town before we headed off on the Cabot Trail and found a place to sleep for the night.

Today we drove the Cabot Trail. :) Never saw much of the beauty of the trail because we were driving through fog. :(  What we did see of this world renowned drive was breathtaking and even with the weather not working in our favour we enjoyed our drive.  We stopped at one point and explored the shoreline and collected unique shaped driftwood.

Driftwood that we thought looked like a boat.

More beautiful coastline on our drive.

We had a day with very little on the schedule because we were camped just outside of North Sydney and we were scheduled to sail out of here at 5:00pm for Agentia, Newfoundland.  We went into town and found some lunch then stopped in on Donna's parents in North Sydney.  We had a lovely visit and it was nice to see their place.  They were in good form and are planning to be out in Kelowna soon for a visit.  We visited for a while and when it was time to leave they gave us a large container full of homemade chocolate chip cookies and a jar of raspberry jam (wow, this was very kind we haven't had any home baked goods since we ran out of the cookies we had brought with us). We boarded the ferry around 3:30pm where we had booked a cabin for the 15 hour trip.  We enjoyed a buffet supper on board and then retired to our room for the evening it was a smooth crossing but we still felt the rocking of the boat all night.  We were a bit worried about poor Daisy, because we had to leave her in the motor home for the whole crossing.  We were quite shocked by the cost of the ferry - $1000.
